Thomas Jefferson said, if you want to achieve something you have never had before, you have to do something you have never done. When running a business you are usually in uncharted territory. There is no one to tell you what to do or how to proceed.

Without a strong work ethic, it will be very difficult to achieve that great result you are looking for. If you want to build a big business or be successful in your career you have to have a strong work ethic to to go with it.

So how do you develop a good work ethic? Here are 5 ideas you can implement today that will build that work ethic muscle.

1. You have to be consistent

What do I mean? You have to keep doing the work to produce the results you want. The results have to be consistent and therefore the work has to be consistent too. For example if my job is to sell insurance and I need to make 2 sales a week, I need to do the work it takes to produce 2 sales a week. I need to make 400 calls a day for 4 days, I will need to make 2 appointments a day from the calls and therefore 8 appointments a week. I will meet with 4 of the 8 appointments and maybe sell 2. The key is to do the activity that generates the result every week no matter what is going on in your life.

2. You have to be on a schedule

When it comes to work, you have to be predictable. You have to get to work at a certain time and leave at a certain time. While at work you have to do certain tasks in order to stay on schedule every single day, 5 days a week. If my job was a writer, I have to find a way to write daily, even though the writing may suck. It's the practice and predictability that produces results not the inspiration. If you want to be successful, you cannot do things when you feel like it, because most people never feel like it. so you have to push past that feeling and discipline those thoughts and just do it. like Nike!

3. Take Care of your Body

Your body is very responsive, if you do not treat it right, it will not produce the energy you need to complete tasks. You have to take care of your nutrition, get your 5 food groups in, avoid junk food, monitor your alcohol intake and exercise. When you do those things, your mind clears up and you have more capacity for thought and ideas, your body gives you the energy you need, you look good and feel good, the benefits are endless. Taking care of your body is part of the recipe for success.

4. Prepare

The one who is the most prepared wins. What am I saying? Plan for tomorrow, tonight. Plan for the week on Sundays. Plan for next month, the last week of this month. If you have a really big project coming up, plan months ahead. What planning does is, you get to think about the results you want, then you come up with a strategy to get those results, you think about the problems that may arise and come up with several solutions to deal with the problems. After planning it’s all execution from there, yes, it’s not always going to go as smoothly as planned, but having a plan to follow allows you to be more flexible when hit with unexpected bumps. In addition, the chances of achieving your goal increase when you have a path to get to them.

5. Find People who work harder than you

There is nothing better than finding people who are more driven than you, and work harder than you at their goals to make you motivated to step up your game. These kinds of people are such a blessing because, they show you how much more you are capable of, and how much more work it takes to get to where you want to get to. Work like them, even if you struggle at first, try to keep up, and eventually their habits will become your habits and influence you positively.

We all have to remind ourselves from time to time to push beyond our current limits, work hard for nothing worth while ever comes easy and best of luck in your pursuit.
