Air India; India's premiere airline operator has announced they will be launching a new female-only section on their planes. The company says up to six rows of seats will be reserved on each domestic flight exclusively for women who are traveling alone.
In an report circulated by The Hindu, Air India's general manager for revenue management Meenakshi Malik announced, “We will be reserving the third row — six seats — in the economy class of the aircraft for female passengers traveling alone."
Starting January 18, seats in the female-only section can be reserved at no additional cost. According to reports, the female section will be featured in Air India's fleet of Airbus A320 airliners for domestic flights. A clarification was made, stating that female travelers with families traveling with them will not be able to occupy seats in the female-only section.
Air India saw it necessary to launch the female-only section on it's flights in response to recent incidents where female travelers have allegedly been sexually assaulted or harassed.
