Inspiring Aspiring Women in Agriculture

It is a big shame that in Kenyan history, women have been dominated a consistent rights abuses as they shoulder an overwhelming lot of responsibilities. Most women in Kenya do enormous agricultural work and produce and significantly add to the overall agricultural output of the nation.

The agricultural work helps them to earn just but a little, hence leaving a big percentage working in the informal sector without national support! This is usually hard for women in Kenya bearing in mind that almost 100% of household chores are done by women and these homes suffer poverty.

Throughout the years women have made an effort to acquire education at an inferior rate, hence increasing their reliance upon men. They are also limited from acquiring and controlling property assets Kenya wide regardless of religion, ethnic group and social class.

If women try to posses property rights over men, they are never not accepted back by their families, hence bringing a great challenge to women. This is usually practiced in areas with high poverty!

It is unbelievable when grave women’s rights abuse is concerned. This is practiced throughout western Kenyan region. This is wife inheritance, whereby women are inherited after the husband dies. They are inherited by male relatives of the deceased husband through a ritual cleansing of the deceased husband’s evil spirit’.

These are some of the traditional rituals which maintain self esteem and a high rise of HIV, which has been a threat in the entire country. A research done shows that the infection rate in women and girls are highly infected with HIV and left to die in their homes.

It is very sad that this cultural norm has highly affected women in Kenya, although the government fails to provide resources for women empowerment. Thanks to FSD and its partner organizations who has started working in various regions in the supply of education, Microfinance, health care as well as other resources for women in Kenya
