To understand the most effective ways Facebook can be used as a marketing tool for your business, we must first consider a couple of things. The first of which is that most folks on Facebook are typically not actively looking to make a purchase.

We must also understand the difference between annoying your friends by posting crap on your timeline and actually paying to advertise your product on Facebook. That said, Facebook has some amazing tools within their ad program that can really help you reach a well defined audience, locally or internationally for pennies on the dollar.

There are a bunch of folks who have failed at promoting their products on Facebook. I believe a product offering must have 3 basic elements associated with it to gain traction via Facebook marketing.

Here are the 3 things a product must have to be able to do well on Facebook.

1. Free trial

This is probably the most important element of all. Keep in mind that the average Facebook user is not on the site to buy stuff. If you want them to take a break from stalking their ex to check out your product, the least you can do is offer them a chance to try it out first. The goal here is to get them into your marketing funnel so you can build value with content marketing and promotional offers later. I must stress this. The goal here is not to make a sale but to get them to try your product offering.

2. Easy signup process

Resist the temptation to want to get a bunch of personal data from your trial users at first. Keep your trial signup as simple as possible. I recommend just collecting an email address, and maybe their first name. Don't ask your trial users to fill out a long form to be able to check out your product. This will only drive folks away. Besides, there is tech out there that can help you capture folks’ information without asking for it.

3. A well defined audience

I cannot tell you how many times I hear entrepreneurs tell me their product is for everyone. Wrong! (in my Donald Trump debate voice). Your product can help a specific type of person and Facebook has some really cool features that will allow you to reach her. Precisely targeting your potential users on Facebook also saves you marketing funds as you strip out a bunch of users that would not be a good fit for your product anyway.
