Although men make up the majority of heads of small businesses globally, recent studies show that women may make for better business leaders.
According to numerous academic studies done, including ones by Chris Bart, professor of strategic management at the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University, and Gregory McQueen, a McMaster graduate and senior executive associate dean at Still University’s School of Osteopathic Medicine, women have been found to run better performing organizations than men.
Surveys done by Zeneger Folkman, a firm that tracks leadership, discovered that women scored higher than men on 12 out of the 16 qualities tracked. After surveying over 7000 clients, they learned that women especially outperformed their male counterparts in the areas of taking initiative and being results-driven.
Here are three of the major categories in which women outperform men when it comes to effective leadership.
1. Patience. Women tend to be more patient than men when dealing with employees. Women have been known to make well thought-out decisions and rarely jump to conclusions or make hasty decisions. Studies have consistently shown that women are willing to wait longer for a desired outcome. Patience is an important virtue in business because For most small businesses, “overnight success” takes seven to 10 years. The winners are the ones that can be patient enough to take actions, which result in small steps toward a specific goal.
2. Good Communication skills. There are some exceptions when we try to characterize any group. That said, women possess an innate skill set that caters towards communication, empathy and emotional intelligence—the key trait required for success in business and in life.
3. Teamwork. Women are known to be much better than men at building and working in teams. Most successful global companies, operate in teams. The team is the backbone of any successful corporation. A company is strong and cohesive when the teams that run it share the same status. Without a happy and cohesive workforce, the organization won't succeed. Studies have shown that the most successful teams within an organization are usually the ones run by a woman or has mostly women in it.
